European Porcelain & Tile We Work With

The name is literal. The slab surfaces we specify most often are made in Europe, and three lines account for most of our work.

SapienStone — Italy. Porcelain slabs from the Iris Ceramica Group. We built a Woodinville kitchen around Calacatta Silky, a matte marble-look porcelain: the veining carries over a mitered waterfall edge and runs down to the floor, and the same material climbs the window wall as a full-height backsplash that wraps into the window return and sill. Porcelain is the honest answer when someone wants marble on a surface that gets cooked on — it does not etch from lemon or wine, it never needs sealing, and a hot pan set straight down will not mark it.

Dekton and Neolith — Spain. Ultra-compact surfaces from Cosentino and TheSize. Both are sintered rather than resin-bound, which is why they hold up where quartz cannot: UV-stable in direct sun, unbothered by freeze-thaw, and dense enough for exterior cladding and outdoor kitchen counters as well as interior work.

Tile, alongside the slabs. Each format wants a different setting method, and that choice does more for how long the work lasts than the tile itself:

  • Glazed ceramic — walls and backsplashes. In an Edmonds kitchen we ran it to the ceiling behind the range, where the glaze catches the window light.
  • Through-body porcelain — floors, wet areas and anywhere the surface takes traffic, set in thin-set mortar.
  • Natural stone tile — set over cement backer board, which is what keeps a stone floor from cracking as the substrate moves.
  • Glass — set in a gentler mastic adhesive, because the body of the tile is visible through the face and a grey mortar will read through it.
  • Large-format panels — laid with leveling systems, since a panel this size shows every millimetre of lippage.

Porcelain and sintered slabs suit kitchens, wet walls and outdoor work; glazed ceramic and glass belong on dry vertical surfaces; natural stone rewards a client who wants the material to age. If you are choosing between them, bring your plans to the Kirkland showroom and we will pull samples.
